Kelight was entrusted with creating the immersive lighting design for a 4D dark ride in a newly developed Evergrande theme park, working closely with the talented Holovis design team. Our role extended beyond lighting—we helped shape the mood with detailed visualizations based on our lighting concepts, ensuring a fully immersive experience from concept to execution. A 4D dark ride is an immersive theme park attraction that combines 3D visuals with physical effects, such as motion, wind, water sprays, and scents. These sensory experiences go beyond sight and sound, synchronized with the ride's narrative. Visitors travel through various scenes in a moving vehicle, with the darkness enhancing the impact of special effects. The ride is designed to fully engage guests, making them feel like part of the story. This creates a heightened sense of immersion and excitement.
The Challenge
Designing for a 4D dark ride means working in 3D applications. Each of the 39 scenes required its own unique lighting approach, along with detailed lighting plans for the queue and a complete system control overview. The challenge was to ensure that every scene was illuminated perfectly to enhance the storytelling, while also ensuring the lighting system was adaptable and easy to manage.
The Solution
Kelight delivered a comprehensive lighting design package that included lighting concepts, lighting plans, color usage, and fixture schedules for 39 different scenes along with the queue area, ensuring the entire ride had a seamless visual flow. Our system control overview allowed for full integration of the lighting into the park’s overall system, making it easy to manage and control across all areas. We also provided visualizations that clearly represented the mood and atmosphere each lighting concept would create, helping stakeholders make informed decisions early in the process. This allowed the team to align creatively while ensuring that the technical execution stayed true to the design vision.

The result is a fully immersive 4D dark ride where lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood and guiding the experience. From the moment visitors enter the queue to their journey through the 39 scenes, the lighting elevates every moment, creating a visually stunning and cohesive ride.
