Mt. Olympus Water and Theme Park in Wisconsin Dells introduces a groundbreaking water attraction designed to set them apart in the competitive water park scene. Meet the Medusa SlideWheel—America's first rotating water slide and Ferris wheel hybrid, engineered to push the boundaries of thrill and technology. Kelight was brought on board to craft a lighting experience that would enhance the ride’s distinctive character, transforming it into a stunning visual centerpiece both day and night.
The Challenge
The Medusa SlideWheel posed a unique challenge: how do you illuminate an enormous, constantly rotating structure without compromising the seamless experience for riders? The design needed to maintain the thrill and visual spectacle while ensuring that the lighting could withstand constant movement, varying weather conditions, and still meet safety regulations. Additionally, the lighting had to work harmoniously with the fluid nature of water and the rotating structure, enhancing the ride's kinetic energy without overwhelming it.
The Solution
Our approach started with an immersive lighting design, integrated into the very fabric of the Medusa SlideWheel. We designed a programmable LED system that could synchronize with the ride’s constant movement and shape, bringing each rotation to life through dynamic lighting and color effects. Custom pixel-controlled LEDs were installed, programmed to reflect the speed and intensity of the slide’s motion. We focused on creating a palette that would shift and pulse with the ride, turning the SlideWheel into a visual spectacle visible from every corner of the park.
The Result
The Medusa SlideWheel is now more than just a thrilling ride—it’s a landmark experience. Visitors are drawn to its hypnotic, ever-changing light show, which evolves throughout the day and especially comes alive after dark. The lighting design amplifies the attraction’s unique kinetic structure, adding a layer of excitement and wonder that elevates the entire Mt. Olympus experience. The project has not only enhanced the ride itself but helped position Mt. Olympus as a leader in innovative water park entertainment, captivating guests and making a splash in the industry.
